The Stars are talking — July, the month of Eclipse Season and Retrograde Planets

As I type this blog, we are at the tail end of said solar eclipse taking place today, (a total one at that!) in the sign of Cancer. Surprisingly, in spite of the excited posts circulating online, the chart of this solar eclipse is one not of chaotic change, but of hope, joy and optimism. The strongest aspect that the sun is making during this eclipse is to the planet Uranus, and while Uranus is a wild card in astrology, bringing about unexpected changes, the harmonious aspect it’s making to the sun tells me that the surprises might be more pleasant than unpleasant.

Let’s dive a little further into exploring this eclipse, because while it may be over today, eclipses are a symbol of the beginning of new cycles and under the new moon in the watery sign of Cancer (ruled by the moon), the potency of the power of the moon is amplified.

Astrologers are usually apprehensive of eclipses because they are a strange phenomena, and when the Sun, representing the Self or I in astrology is covered by the Moon, representing the emotions and subconscious, there is an effect on the human psyche, that might take some time to unravel. Cancer is associated with the waters of the ocean and the waters of our emotion. This beautiful, feminine sign is the sign of motherhood and for me this eclipse is foretelling amongst other things, the rise of the feminine within the collective consciousness.

Now what does that mean exactly? To me it means that this eclipse brings out things that are buried within our subconscious and we are willing to look at our more internal, emotional selves than we usually are, and when we do, we have available to us a chance at an expansion of consciousness.

As I mentioned this eclipse makes a positive aspect to Uranus and other than being a wild card, Uranus is also a planet of intuition and psychic activities. Which means that at this time we might get lightning flashes of Uranus insight into our unconscious selves, and because the moon is in a water sign and Uranus in an earth sign, these insights are likely to arrive in the form of feelings and body sensations.

While the eclipse brings with it a positive note, in order to really benefit from its vibrational influence, we have to look at what the rest of the planets are doing, and yes we already have four retrograde planets in the skies right now and on July 8th notorious Mercury will be joining the ranks, leaving us with a total of 5 retrograde planets including Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Pluto.

It is worthy to note that in some ways retrogrades and eclipses can have similar effects on our psyche, in that they both encourage us to go inside, and assist in revealing what was otherwise alluding our conscious minds. This particular Mercury retrograde will begin in the sign of Leo and end in the sign of Cancer, making it an emotional ride, specially when it begins as it aspects Mars in Leo when it starts, giving it a fiery edge before dragging us into our watery Cancerian emotions. Now the other outer planets will add their flavor to this mix and in a nutshell, all this retrograde energy, spurred on by the eclipse is asking us to shed layers that no longer belong, so that we can feel the expansion of our consciousness into the truth, that is love.

However, sometimes shedding the layers may not look pretty or feel particularly pleasurable, specially when the lunar eclipse hits us on July 16th, we might as a whole, feel raw and exposed; but sometimes that exposure is necessary in order for us to grow as individuals and also as a race.

My advice for this eclipse season while the planets sing their retrograde song to us, is to surrender and observe and allow. If you want to make this into a meditation practice, find yourself a comfortable space in the dark, close your eyes and allow your inner self to reveal what you need to see, and embrace all the feelings that come up, choosing to release resistance, and when it feels difficult, just breath. Your next breath could be the key to that door within which has been locked for so long, but now, the time is right to open it with an exhale.
