Letting go for Dear Life

I think we are all familiar with the concept of holding on for dear life. Interestingly enough, the phrase really comes from facing a life or death situation, when holding on equals life and letting go equals death. It’s quite poetic then that often when we are metaphorically holding on to something for dear life, whether it be a belief, relationship, job or a way of being; letting go of that can actually create more opportunity for living.

What comes to my mind as I write this, are the patterns that I have constructed in my life in my relationships that make me feel safe, yet don’t allow room for growth. Most likely at some point we have had those relationships that we know are holding us back, and yet we hold on to them for dear life. And we lie to ourselves about what works, and I believe this is because these relationships are mirrors of where we are holding anything less than love for ourselves and in order to let them go, we would have to surrender our stories and be honest and truthful.

The word ‘truth’ has the word ‘hurt’ within it because sometimes when we face up to the truth, it hurts to realize that the only thing in the way of our happiness, the only obstacle, is us. And so we hold on to the constrictions within our own consciousness as if we are holding on to a precious jewel, because we fear the alternative. But what if the alternative to holding on for dear life, is letting go for dear life? My friend used the analogy of when he went skydiving, he only had one option: jump. And even though he was scared out of his wits, he knew that he had to let go and jump, in order to save his life.

So what if instead of holding on for dear life, which causes you to live less, you let go for dear life, let go like your life depends on it, let go like it is the only option you have?
Is it possible then, that the only thing that will die will be your fear of living? If you let go, perhaps you will expand into more truth, and while it might hurt, isn’t the alternative of untruth more painful?

So think about where in your life you are holding on so tightly that it is squeezing the life out of it, and then consciously and purposefully let go. Let go so hard that you fall straight into the expansiveness of your consciousness and allow it to reveal what’s there and the next steps to take. Let the barriers dissolve with love and let life live through you.
